Release of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines

The release of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines leaves many wondering about the similarities and differences between the new ones and those it replaced. As nutrition professionals we're frequently asked their purpose, and why these guidelines differ from each half-decade previous ones. The answer is simple, and it's up to us to explain it in terms the public will understand. For instance, what's more, what's limit, what's less? And then of course, the eternal, "but why...?"

My answers to these questions don't include much detail as that what most people, unless sitting across from you for a session or class don't want to hear. They just want the quick clarification.
I recommend the following short answers

General words used in guidelines
  1. More
  2. Limit
  3. Less

My short and simple explanation
  1. If you were eating 1 piece (or 1/2 a cup), you can eat 3 to 4 times as much
  2. Eat no more than this amount (list either portions or illustrate with hands)
  3. If you were eating 4 pieces (or 2 cups, or daily or several times a day), eat only 1/2 piece, 1/2 cup or once a week
The 2015 Guidelines are not perfect, and have been the subject of much controversy. Unfortunately as the controversial discussions continue we're all missing the opportunity to present a united front as the nutrition experts, and start providing detailed explanations to our clients and patients. Group settings will lend themselves to this well as they'll generate questions and discussions and provide the opportunity to reaffirm our expertise. Good way to promote business as well as help our clients.
