I'm an author, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, cook, gardener, animal rescuer and advocate of maintaining a sustainable and renewable environment. I'm also a registered dietitian nutritionist enjoying a thriving practice. I like variety in my life and practice and plan to keep on growing, learning, teaching, mentoring, changing and enjoying life's amazing abundance.
Living with my husband of 50+ years on a small ranch in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, we enjoy baking ancient grain breads, cooking, growing fruit trees, chiles and organic vegetables. We love nature walks in the desert and off-road trips exploring the area. We have 3 daughters, 5 grandchildren, and an assorted and always changing menagerie of rescued dogs, cats, turtles, frogs, fish, crayfish and exotic lizards.
As president and sole proprietor of Cassens Associates – Diversified Nutrition Management Systems, I provide a variety of wide-ranging nutrition and dietetics services to private individuals and long-term care institutions. I'm an author with three published books as well as articles ranging from professional topics to nutrition related blogs. I write every day and plan to publish more books in the near future. I also participate in select workshops and seminars every year. As an independent consultant my experience is broad and varied. I have helped open and provide consulting services to group homes for adults (CCRC) and independent living communities such as Residential and Assisted Living centers.
As a lifetime member of the Academy of Nutrition, I'm also a member in the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Nutrition Entrepreneurs and Dietetics in Healthcare Communities Dietetic Practice Groups (DPG). I participate actively in Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition (LAHIDAN), and several other Member Interest Groups (MIG). My experience has provided many opportunities to review professional publications and books for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and independent authors and to work on national and state level annual meetings and hold appointed and elected board memberships in DHCC. 2012 marked my golden anniversary as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), and since then my professional organization has awarded me several honors. In 2014 I received the Dietetics in Healthcare Communities (DHCC) Distinguished Member Award, in 2015 the California Dietetic Association the 2015 Excellence in Private Practice, Business or Communication Award and completed a LEAP-MRT Therapy certification course with Oxford Biomedical Technologies. In 2017 The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognized me for services to the dietetics profession and by optimizing health through food and nutrition and awarding me a of Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND) for contributions to the profession, customer focus, integrity, innovation and social responsibility.
